We’ve been speaking to summer students about their jobs and their experience at Keyera. But not all students stay for just the summer. Ryan, a Mechanical Engineering Co-op Student, has an eight month term for the summer and all the way to the end of December.
Ryan works at the Alberta Envirofuels Facility in Edmonton, providing support to the engineering team and also managing his own projects at the facility.
What made Ryan want a position at Keyera? It’s the great reputation Keyera has within the industry.
“I had often heard Keyera’s name mentioned positively in discussions relating to the oil and gas industry,” said Ryan. “I did some research and spoke with some people in the industry and realized that I shared a similar vision to Keyera’s. Keyera is intent on growing as a company in a responsible and optimal manner, similar to the way I plan on furthering my career. For this reason, Keyera seemed to be a good fit.”
“Also, the fact that Keyera is an Alberta-based company is a big differentiating factor for me. Lastly, I certainly saw working with an industry leader as a great opportunity to expose myself to industry and to have a valuable learning experience.”
Students coming to Keyera will find that there are always opportunities to gain more skills and learn from other employees.
“As a student here, I feel like I have access to all the resources I need to be successful in my work,” said Ryan. “More specifically, the opportunity to work with some great industry experts has already proven invaluable to me. This company is filled with people who have years of knowledge, so I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to pick my coworkers’ brains.”
“I’ve been trusted with some meaningful projects that have afforded me some great lessons. Also, I’m having a great time participating in some of the extracurricular activities, like the Health Challenge.”
Extracurricular activities like the Health Challenge bring coworkers closer together and give new employees and students a chance to get to know their coworkers. It’s also the great personalities that work for Keyera that make students feel comfortable.
“By the end of the first week, I was already beginning to feel quite comfortable,” said Ryan. “Everybody was welcoming and willing to take the time out of their day to give me some insight from their roles within the company. This helped me better understand my role within the company and how to effectively contribute to the team.”
The rest of Ryan’s work term will be diverse and exciting as he finishes the summer and works into the winter months. By working at Keyera, he has a chance to foster his skills and be part of a growing company making waves in the industry.
“In the next five years, I see myself working for a major industry player, like Keyera,” said Ryan. “I would say that by working for Keyera on this co-op term, I’m already taking a major step toward realizing this goal.”
