As part of Keyera’s long-standing commitment to supporting education in the communities where we live and work, we established youth scholarships to help Alberta students become valuable contributors to our workforce.
This year, Keyera awarded the first Peter J. Renton Memorial Scholarship, providing an Alberta student up to $6,000 over his or her first two years of study at an Alberta university or college. The purpose of the scholarship is to help support students studying disciplines related to the oil and gas sector.
Established to honour long-time Keyera employee Peter Renton, who worked in the energy sector for over 40 years, the scholarship honours his legacy that continues to be a touchstone for many of Keyera's environmental, safety, social responsibility and employee competency programs. This scholarship was established to help recognize Peter’s commitment to lifelong learning.
We are proud to award the 2010 scholarship to Mario Poretti, a first-year engineering student at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
In his application, Mario listed his favourite courses as biology, physics, chemistry and calculus because he finds them most challenging. Outside of the classroom, Mario’s accomplishments include volunteering in the community and playing sports. He’s also highly involved in leadership activities, including being an active member of his school’s Social Justice Club, a local Seniors Mentoring Youth Program and by serving as the student liaison for Parent Council meetings.
Mario also identified how his personal attributes made him an excellent candidate for the scholarship.
“I believe that I relate to Mr. Renton in my integrity,” Mario wrote in his personal essay. “I work hard and do my best to make a difference in every action I take. I’m optimistic and truly want to make a difference in my world.”
Mario’s references also spoke highly of his involvement in the community and of his character.
“Every so often, one has the opportunity to have a special student in one’s school; a student who is bright, dedicated and possesses the drive and determination to set themselves apart from their fellow students,” wrote Terry Godwaldt, staff member at Mario’s school. “Mario Poretti is such a student.”
