|David Smith 'well-heeled'
Sporting stilettos and a smile, Keyera Executive Vice President, David Smith, showed his style and his compassion as he raced around Calgary’s Olympic Plaza in the YWCA’s “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event to raise money for the Sheriff King Shelter. David was one of many local celebrities and concerned men who strapped on high heels to support this important cause and raise awareness about domestic violence. Undaunted by stairs, hills and uneven pavement, David, in his flashy patent heels, finished the course with ease and in the process raised $9,065, making him one of the top individual fundraisers to participate in the event.
In total, “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” raised over $296,370 which will go toward helping women and their children take steps to walk away from domestic violence. The YWCA Sheriff King Shelter is a 42 bed emergency shelter for abused women and their children. Services include emergency shelter, supportive individual and group counselling, child support, community liaison follow-up support, basic needs, community referrals and advocacy. In 2009, the Sheriff King Shelter provided shelter and more than 17,000 hours of counselling support for 722 women and children (311 women/411 children) fleeing domestic violence.
