Indigenous Relations

Keyera is committed to developing and maintaining meaningful, long-term relationships with our neighbours and with the communities near our operations.

With some of our operations, Keyera constructs and operates facilities in areas where Indigenous peoples live, work and conduct traditional activities. We believe that by actively engaging with these Indigenous communities we will be able to identify potential impacts of our activities, and develop mutually acceptable solutions and benefits.

We recognize that Indigenous communities are unique rightsholders who have a distinct relationship to the land.  We seek to understand their diverse values and traditions, and commit to active consultation with impacted Indigenous communities well in advance of projects.

We also believe we can play a role in contributing to Indigenous communities’ growth and capacity by supporting training, employment, business development and community investment opportunities. Keyera has an Indigenous Business Involvement (IBI) process to determine the capacities of local First Nations or Metis communities to contribute to our operations and projects and we encourage Indigenous commercial entities to respond to RFP/RFQ opportunities.

Guiding Principles

Keyera’s approach to Indigenous relations is guided by the following principles:

  • Keyera respects the diversity of Indigenous cultures and seeks to understand the customs, values and traditions of Indigenous peoples.

  • Keyera is committed to honest, open, ongoing communication with Indigenous communities affected by our operations and seeks to engage in timely and meaningful consultation with these communities.

  • Keyera supports strategies intended to contribute to building capacity in Indigenous communities, such as training, employment, business development and community investment opportunities related to our operational activities.

By establishing long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with the Indigenous communities near our areas of operation, we believe we can mitigate potential effects of our activities, as well contribute to their growth and wellbeing.
